Titanic (Monday, November 19, 2007 ) When the Titanic was revealed, it was said to be unsinkable, but it sank on it's maiden voyage. The people who were in first class got to leave in the lifeboats first and those in the third class were locked in the lower deck. A rule was also set that the women and ladies were to leave first and the men last. In the movie Titanic, there was a rich man who bribed the official with money to allow him to get into the lifeboat. But the official threw the money back at him because money was of no use to the dead. Each lifeboat was estimated to be able to carry more than 40 passengers. However, most of the lifeboats left with some only carrying 20 passengers. One factor to take note during the lowering of the lifeboats was that the lifeboat must be maintained in a horizontal position the whole time during the lowering, and not one side high and one side low, so as to prevent the passengers from falling off. When the lifeboats hit the water, they must quickly work together and row the boat as far away as possible so as to prevent their lifeboats from being sucked down by the Titanic. A few hours after the Titanic sank, One of the lifeboats's leader hesitated as to whether he should lead his lifeboat back to save more people who are in the water. Also, of the 20 lifeboats that left, only one lifeboat went back, and only three people were saved when this lifeboat went back. Because of the tragedy, Titanic's sister ship, Olympic, which already finished construction then, did not touch water because no one wanted to buy it's tickets, hence, the White Star Line, the company of the ships, had to sell the ship to the scrapyard so as to prevent bankruptcy. During the trial after the tragedy, it was found out that the Titanic had been warned of icebergs. Also, they realised that a drill was supposed to be conducted during the journey but was cancelled by the captain so save time as the White Star Line wanted to make history in two areas, the largest travelling object on the seas and to be the fastest to cross the Atlantic Ocean. They also found that during the journey, there was another ship which called for help to the Titanic but the radioman rudely said with a bad tone that they are the biggest and the most luxurious ship in the world and have no time for them. Today, what can we learn from the Titanic? First, there were more than the number of passenger the Titanic was meant to carry. Today, Are we carrying more than what we were meant to carry? For an example, we want to go out and save those lost souls in this world. But while we are saving souls, we try to talk to many souls at the same time. In the end, it may not only cause you to be unable to concentrate your efforts to one soul, you may also get frustrated, and may lose your faith. Next, the ship that was believed to be unsinkable sank on the first voyage. The first! Sometimes, we go around telling people we are this we are that, making ourselves seem so holy and righteous. But inside us there is a weakness, that is, in the case of the Titanic is that it is made of iron, and is sinkable if bow section and 3 other sections in the bottom of the ships gets filled. Which also means, that with the bow section and 3 other sections filled, it can still stay afloat. But that night, the ship had 4 other sections filled. In our lives, our weakness is our sinful nature. When Jesus died on the cross, it was our sins that was crucified and not our sinful nature. This is the weakness that causes man to fall into temptation. And because of that, the Bible often talk about resisting temptation. My third point was that different people got different chances to get saved. However, in our world, everyone should have an equal chance to get saved, regardless of whether one is a male or a female or whether on is fat or thin or whether one is rich or poor. We should not go around and choose people to save but instead save all. Bribery is not able to save us from this dying world. When Jesus comes back, money cannot buy themselves a place in the kingdom of God. So remember, Don't love your money. Because money cant get you into the kingdom of God. My first point was not to carry too many passengers. Here something opposite. In our lifeboats, are carrying to the full capacity our lifeboat is supposed to carry? Are we trying our best to save the people out there who are lost? While we should not overload our lifeboats, we should also do our best to save the souls. Next, the lifeboats have to lowered in a horizontal position. Are we stable as we try to save people from the ship? If we are not stable, what's the point of getting the people onto our lifeboats? the people will still fall into the waters. We must be stable ourselves first before we can even save the lost. Now that we've saved the people from the dying world, we must quickly get the survivors on our boats to work together and row quickly away from the world. If we dont, we will get sucked down when the world dies away. We must steer far away from the world, so that we don't get influence by the world. Or else we'll be pulled down too. Of the 20 lifeboats that left, only 1 came back. In this world, there are many lifeboats who are saving people. It's not a compeitition to see who can save more people. But, of all the lifeboats, us, that left, how many of us would go the extra mile to save the remaining who are still in the waters? Also, will we not care of the circumstances and go back and save the remaing people in the waters or will we hesitate like what the leader of the lifeboat in the case of the Titanic did? Because of his hesistation, more people froze to death and hence by the time we go back, we wont be able to save much people. The next point is that because of Titanic, or to be more specific, the bad leadership of the captain of Titanic, it caused the sister ship, which was Olympic, to be unable to touch water. In our lives, we might not know that whatever we're doing will affect the people around us. We may think that oh, i've committed a sin, and the problem lies with me, but we didn't realise it is actually affecting others too. Sometimes, we fail to listen to the warnings God gives us. In the case of the Titanic, they have been warned of icebergs but the captain had the "heck care" attitude because of the fact that it was labeled 'unsinkable". Because of his attitude, he caused not only money to be lost, he even caused the death of many people! Sometimes we ask, "why can't i hear God speaking to me?" Well, I feel, to really hear God speaking, we should you know quieten down our hearts, and realy soften our hearts for God's tiny little voice to be able to speak into us. Another reason why i think the captain had that kind of attitude is because he wanted fame! Because he will be the first captain to sail the Titanic and the captain to sail across the Altantic in the fastest time. Also, he'll be the first captain to sail the largest object on water. Hence this may be why he was eager to reach the destination. Are we like him today? are we eager to get what we want and hence neglect our relationship with God. One more point is that are we too proud today? Are we so proud that we forget the rest who are lost? In the case of the Titanic, they did not choose to offer help to another ship nearby which was out of fuel. Are like the radioman who used the bad tone to reject others? I'm not saying we must never reject others but if we are in good circumstances or are able to still help, we should go and help and not reject. And even if we have to reject, we should tell them nicely and politely and also try help in other ways. Today, look back and reflect. Rate yourself honestly and find out what areas are there to change. Apply these lessons from the Titanic and mean it. Here's some other facts about the Titanic. -If we place the Titanic upwards vertically, did you know it's actually taller than the Twin Towers that collasped? -Many years before, centuries before the White Star Line even started, there was an author who wrote a book called Titanic and the story also said about this large ship hitting an iceberg. Think of it, many years even before the company was set up! -When the Titanic was found, they realised that it actually drifted 9 miles from where it sent out it's SOS. which also means, if the Titanic fired it's SOS at point A, it was actually found at the bottom of the sea called point B. And the distance between point A and point B is 9 miles! cool eh? -When the company, not the White Star Line but another company, one which does search and rescue, found the ship, their little unmanned submarines found some safes in the first class rooms which had gold bars! But they left the gold bars there because they are heavy to lift up. -The Titanic had four funnels. did you know that the last funnel was a fake? -The company lifted the statue at the grand staircase and a huge peice of the hull of the ship and they are now resting at the museum. -There is an 18 foot long and made to scale model of the Titanic somewhere in this world. I forgot the place but i know there is one. 18 foot long, made to scale. With all the windows and beds and tables and even the captain's bridge! evrything! made to scale. It's very cool. That's all i know. God Bless! 0 comments |
